Bell Ingram
Design appointed Project Managers for Restoration of unique Art
Gallery 14 October 2002
Perth & Kinross Council have
appointed Bell Ingram Design as Project Managers and Building
Conservation Consultants in respect of the Category A listed
Fergusson Gallery, a vital part of Perth's townscape and home of the
internationally renowned Fergusson Collection.
The
"Fergusson" is unique in Scotland and possibly is of international
significance. Designed by a local schoolmaster and engineer Adam
Anderson, the building was originally constructed as Perth's Water
Works in 1830/34, the cast iron dome serving as the reservoir for
drinking water drawn from filter beds on Moncrieffe Island close by
in the River Tay.
Although it has been altered and adapted
extensively in the past, the building still retains the status as
being a unique example of its type. Unfortunately, the passage of
time and inherent features have led to the point where major works
are now required to save the dome. Structural engineers are
presently working on the design of the conservation works, which are
likely to cost in excess of £600,000 and will be subject to scrutiny
by Historic Scotland and the Heritage Lottery Fund, with whom
applications have been made for financial support. Although many
hurdles have yet to be crossed, Bill McConnell of Bell Ingram Design
is confident that the project aimed at conserving this jewel in the
crown of Scotland's heritage will proceed within the next few years.
