Upper Scone, River Tay
Upper Scone Fishings, Week 6, River Tay, Perthshire
The opportunity to acquire a week in perpetuity for 6 rods on this beautiful stretch of the River Tay. 23 named pools over 2 miles of single bank fishing. 2 fishing huts. Prime time for spring run salmon.
Situation
The Upper Scone Beat is situated a few miles north of Perth in one of the most beautiful parts of Perthshire. It is easily accessible by road and rail whilst Edinburgh and Dundee Airports are within easy distance.
Perth and Dundee have all the facilities commensurate with major regional centres and all forms of country sports are available in the area. There are numerous local golf courses with championship courses at Blairgowrie, St Andrews and Carnoustie.
Description
The Tay is the largest of the Scottish rivers with a catchment basin of 2,510 square miles. An immense amount of water flows down it, indeed more than the Severn and the Thames combined.
It takes its name from where it flows out of Loch Tay at Kenmore, though its sources are fully 40 miles to the west, rising on the slopes of Ben Lui on the borders of Argyll and Perthshire. These mountain streams unite above Crianlarich to form the Fillan which flows into Loch Dochart and from thence as the River Dochart flowing into Loch Tay.
The River Tay is world renowned for its salmon fishing and is one of Scotland’s four (Tay, Dee, Spey and Tweed) premier salmon fisheries. The main stem can be broken down into three sections; Loch Tay to the confluence with the Tummel, The Tummel to the Isla and from the Isla to the sea. Upper Scone fishings are part of the lower section and some of the most famous and prolific beats are to be found on this part.
The salmon season runs from 15 January to 15 October with spring fish being the most sought after and unlike many rivers the spring run here has held up better than most. At present the average catch for the week is modest; this could change over time. The beat has been only lightly fished in this week in recent years.
This beat comprises about 2 miles of single (left) bank fishing and is divided into the upper and lower beats. The upper section known as the Pitlochrie beat has 13 named pools and the lower section known as the Benchil beat has 10 named pools.
An agreement exists with the owner of the opposite bank whereby the beats are fished on alternate days with a limit of 6 rods per beat. This ensures that there is never anybody fishing the opposite bank. This reciprocal arrangement also covers moorings, huts, access and bank maintenance.
Week 6 usually falls in late February through to early March.
This is an opportunity to share a week that can yield an early springer those “most beautiful and prized fish making all the effort worthwhile” (quote from www.fishtay.co.uk). The River Tay District Advisory Committee together with the Tay Foundation have been instrumental in protecting the salmon within the River Tay catchment area, giving advice to proprietors and the Fisheries Board and negotiating buying out the estuary nets in order to improve the health of the river system. No netting in the Tay Estuary has taken place since 1997.
Outgoings
There is an annual management charge payable to Salar Management Services Ltd of currently £300 per annum per rod for 2005. This annual charge covers maintenance of river banks, boats and engines including ghillies’ wages and Local Authorities rates.
