Company Vans Taxation

David Robertson
Associate Director, Perth Office
One of the features of Gordon Brown’s tenure as
Chancellor of the Exchequer has been his habit
of announcing legislative changes in his annual
budget that don’t come into effect until some
time in the future. Such changes then appear to
creep up almost unnoticed to most people. One
example of this is the change to the taxation of
company vans used privately by employees, which
includes commercial vehicles and double cab
pickups.
This was announced in the chancellor’s budget
statement on 17 March 2004 and will come into
effect on 5 April 2007. With effect from this
date, an employee who is provided with a company
van will pay £660 pa if they are a basic rate
tax payer, plus a further £110 if fuel for
private use is also provided. This compares
unfavourably with the current regime where a
basic rate tax payer pays £110 pa for private
usage of a van less than four years old and only
£77 if the van is more than four years old.
There is no charge for private fuel under the
current rules. As the new rules make no
allowance for the age of the van, employees
currently enjoying private usage and fuel of
their employers five year old van, will pay tax
of £770 pa in comparison to this years charge of
£77 pa - ten times more than what is currently
being paid! Employers should ensure that any
employees likely to be affected are advised
accordingly.

A New Look for Bell Ingram

Paul Wakefield
Marketing Manager, Perth Office
You may have noticed a change to our logo and
the design and layout of this latest edition of
your Bell Ingram Half Year Review. We recently
set out to refresh the appearance of the firm
and change the company logo in order to better
represent the skills, services and
professionalism of our diverse and progressive
practice. There was also a need to distinguish
the work carried out by Bell Ingram Design, a
wholly owned subsidiary of Bell Ingram
specialising in Architecture and Building
Surveying, and as such an additional logo was
required for this design orientated division of
the business.
Edinburgh based design agency ‘StudioLR’ was
instructed to create two new logos along with
new associated materials including property
particulars and a company brochure. The
challenge was to provide a more up to date look
whilst retaining the existing values and
traditions of the firm. We feel that the new
appearance has provided a great new look for the
company and will enable us to portray the
professionalism of the firm whilst delivering
the same excellent levels of service. We
continue to specialise in four key areas:
Rural Land Management
Estate Agency
Pipelines and Utilities
Architecture & Building Surveying
It is important for us to retain a sense of
tradition whilst reflecting the changing nature
of the industries within which we operate.
Essentially it is business as usual, albeit with
a new look.
