SITUATION

The beat lies on Lower Deeside some 3.5 miles from the City of Aberdeen, the “Oil Capital of Europe”. There is ready access to Aberdeen from the south by road, rail, or air. High quality hotel accommodation is available in the immediate vicinity of the beat.

THE RIVER DEE

The River Dee is a renowned salmon river, rising in the Cairngorm Mountains and flowing for over 80 miles through the Grampian region in north east Scotland before entering the North Sea at Aberdeen. After some difficult seasons, the benefits of a variety of conservation measures now appear to be bearing fruit with the 2007 season producing a marked upturn in catches. There are also signs that the spring run is recovering some of its previous vitality. The river is administered by the Dee Salmon Fishery Board. The Board sets and directs policy for management of the river’s salmonid fish stocks and their habitat, assisted by advice from the Dee Advisory Group, a panel of scientists and biologists.

THE BEAT

The beat consists of 1.5 miles of single and double bank with 15 named pools, 7 lying in Ardoe and 8 in Murtle. Many of the pools are very long and able to be fished by more than one angler, generally from the bank. Each beat has a full time ghillie to provide advice about the river and fishing conditions. There is also the use of a comfortable Scandinavian style chalet on the Ardoe beat and a fishing bothy on the Murtle beat. The Ardoe and Murtle Fishings were sold on a timeshare basis several years ago. Accordingly, the fishing rights are to be exercised in accordance with a Deed of Conditions and Management Agreement. A copy of the Agreement is available to interested parties on request. An annual management charge is made, which covers outgoings principally the DSFB levy and ghillies’ wages. The charge in 2007 for the two rods was approximately £375.

SUBJECTS OF SALE

Two rods in week 13 are being offered for sale. This week falls at the end of April / beginning of May and, in 2008 commences on 28 April. Two other rods fish this week but are not included in the subjects of sale. The current owner has been unable to fish these rods fully over the last few seasons. Consequently, there seems to be potential for more fish to be taken than have been recorded to date. In addition to salmon, sea trout can also be expected in the right conditions. The catch records are as follows:

Year Salmon & Grilse Sea Trout
1998 1
1999
2000
2001 5
2002 3
2003 2
2004 2 2

DIRECTIONS

From the south side of Aberdeen take the B9077 “South Deeside Road” signposted to Banchory. Ardoe beat is located some 3.5 miles along that road on the right with Murtle Beat on the opposite bank. There is good vehicular access to both beats with the car park and chalet being adjacent to the New Pool on the Ardoe Beat.

PRICE

Offers in the region of £5,000 are invited for the two rods.
