DESCRIPTION
The fishing is divided into 2 daily rotating
beats totalling over 3 miles of double bank water for six rods. If a
single party does not take both beats together, then the 2 beats
will accommodate 3 rods each, rotating at 6am each day, with
exception Sunday midnight when the tenants will remain on the same
beat for Monday night through to 6am Tuesday. This applies to sea
trout only (June, July, early August) and tenants are requested to
contact the ghillie or the estate office to ascertain which beat
they are to commence on. For further clarification please contact
the ghillie, Godfrey Darling, on 01307 850248.
The lower beat called Downiepark is approximately 1 mile in length
with 13 named pools. It is a good holding beat and fishes best in
highest water, except during night time seatrout fishing.
The upper beat, formerly comprising of Riverwalk, Castle and
Meetings beats is approximately 2 miles in length and fishes better
in lower water conditions. There is more shade afforded by the many
trees and high banks. This beat also has more than twenty named
pools, including Sawmill Dam and Meetings pools.
The daily rotation of beats will give fishers a very varied week's
fishing, with good fishing even in lower water conditions.
There is also comfortable accommodation available near the water on
the estate. Tenants taking both beats and Wellbank Cottage for the
week will enjoy a discount of one rod per week. Wellbank Cottage has
4 bedrooms, 1 of which is en-suite, has oil fired central heating.
There is one full-time ghillie but tenants should realise that
unless they take both beats together, then his time must be divided
between the beats.
During the period 16th February - 30th May, double/single barbless
hooks require to be used i.e. no trebles. Please also note that for
the period 16th February - 31st May, ALL salmon, seatrout and grilse
are to be returned. This decision has been brought in by the Fishery
Board in an effort to conserve spring salmon stock.
Fishing is by fly only even when conditions suggest otherwise, those
fishers who return more fish to the water than they keep will be
looked on more favourably for future bookings.
