Stilligarry is a traditional crofting township approximately 12 miles south of Balivanich, the main service centre for the Uists, where there are shops, schools, healthcare facilities and an airport with regular flights to the Scottish mainland. Creagorry, around six miles away, provides everyday amenities including a convenience store, post office and filling station, while Lochboisdale, approximately 14 miles distant, offers further shops, services and the ferry terminal with regular sailings to Mallaig and Oban.
South Uist is a stunning island surrounded by crystal clear sea with white sand beaches to the west and heather uplands dominated by Beinn Mhor to the east.

The 20 miles of machair that runs behind the sand dunes is productive with nature-friendly farming which supports many rare species, including wader birds, Corncrake and Corn Bunting. There is superb off-road horse riding, exceptional archaeology, and opportunities for water sports. The machair lochs have world-class freshwater fishing. The Hebridean Way walking and cycle route runs through Uist.

South Uist has a population of approximately 1800 people. It is one of the last strongholds of the Gaelic language in Scotland and has an active crofting community. South Uist is linked by causeway to the other four islands in the Uist chain. Lochboisdale is the main ferry terminus with sailings to Mallaig and Oban. A school bus runs to the nearest primary school 8 miles away at Lochdar and Lionacleit secondary school, which is approximately 9 miles. The University of the Highlands and Islands deliver fine art, music, and archaeology courses from Uist. There is a community library, sports centre, hospital, and other local services nearby.
